Seniors in the Work WorldLady sitting on bench

These days, people are in better physical shape than their ancestors and many seniors choose to work for their own personal "pulse" - in some cases it satisfies their need to be needed, to keep busy, and to fill days with either part time or full time work.

Some baby boomers are hitting retirement age and realizing that now they have the means - maybe the cash and the time to start a brand new business and fulfill a possible dream they have had and now can live.

Some people who worked in a high paced position during their working years, turn to a craft that allows them to work with their hands or their imaginations. Possibly something they wanted to do but money was so good as far as their careers, they could never leave their position to follow a dream.

If you are a senior and are thinking about rejoining the work world in any capacity and you are of the minority of people who do not use a computer, then you may have to do your homework. Even small Mom and Pop businesses use computers. If you are rusty or if your background in computers is non-existent, check with your local library or business center.

  • First, visit your local library and get familiar with the internet and their computer and borrow a couple of books to work with. Many libraries hold computer training for senior citizens.
  • Look for the adult education class schedule for your local school. Often there is a beginning computer training evening class.
  • Look for online senior computer training sessions. Here are three that I am aware of -
Senior Net offers a full catalog of instructor-facilitated online courses on a broad range of topics, including computers and the Internet.
Taming Your Computer a beginners manual.  Barb Walker, the author, taught seniors to use computers for over six years.
PC For Seniors is a computer consulting company offering one on one training or tutoring right in your own home. Look for this type of service in your area and get prices.
